La Tour du Canon

Élevée sur un plan ovale et simplement accolée à la courtine, elle témoigne d’une adaptation tardive de la forteresse à la généralisation de l’artillerie. Elle renforce l’appareil défensif sur la face la plus exposée, en un point où les défenses naturelles font défaut. Sa hauteur initiale n’est pas connue.

L’étage inférieur, voûté, s’ouvrait sur la lice par une canonnière surbaissée dont la largeur offrait un large angle de tir en direction du plateau, et par trois meurtrières à fente de tir cruciforme. Deux de ces meurtrières, opposées, battaient la lice en enfilade ; la troisième a été murée après que sa fente de tir a été endommagée.

Cannon Tower

Raised on an oval-shaped plan and simply placed beside the curtain, it is the witness of a stronghold’s late adaptation to artillery spreading. It strengthened the defensive device on the most exposed side in a spot where there is hardly ever any natural defence. We do not know its original height.

The vaulted lower level opened on the fortified wall by a lowered gunboat which width gave it a large shooting angle toward the plateau, and by three slit loopholes with cruciform shooting. Two of these loopholes, from opposite sides, aimed at the fortified wall in rows. The third one was walled after its shooting slit was damaged.
